Artist Statement: I created this still life using a stack of magazines we keep laying around. I wan't planning on reducing the number magazines in each shot, but the light was fading away giving me less room to work with on my table. These magazines are my church magazines and I love to read them. I enjoyed working with the natural light coming into my house. I'm glad I took the photo when I did because it makes it look like the magazines are surrounded by darkness.
Artist Statement: For one of my still life's I wanted to include fruit, so I decided on apples since we have a lot of them. I saw that other photographers used wooden backgrounds and I thought it looked very good. I was able to turn over one of our wooden N- tables and put the apples inside it. It created a feeling that the apples were surrounded by wood and I liked that. Apples do have some importance in my family because all my little brother does is eat one bite then throw it on the floor. These apples remind me of all the half-eaten ones I find laying around our house.
Artist Statement: For this still life I decided to take a photo of our firewood we keep stacked between two trees in our backyard. At first I wasn't sure I wanted to take a photo of it, but then I noticed the organization of the wood. On the bottom there is old wood, in the middle twigs, and the top is new wood. I appreciated the way it looked like the wood was getting squished between the trees. This wood is important to me because we always used to have family campfires together using that wood. I was also always the one who started the fire, so I ended up using that pile a lot.
Artist Statement: To take this still life I grabbed my four favorite hats and placed them on my piano. I used our turquoise bench to add a pop of color to the image. These hats hold some sentimental value to me because I bought them in many places around the U.S.. They remind me of those places I purchased them and the people I was with at that time. For the first photo I decided to use a hymn book to add something to the photo.
Artist Statement: This still life was taken outside right behind my house. I was able to get it so that the sun was in line with the tops of the reeds. I actually like the blurred one the best because it dulls some of the sunlight and spreads it out in a way. These reeds were super tiny when I was a kid. Then I moved and when I came back they were huge. They remind me of the time I spent in my house as a little kid.
